Pech's MP3 Blog entry #10 & 11

The weeks before Winter Break started, we studied about the meiosis and mitosis, we also learned about enzyme and the reactions that take place in them. There are two reactions that take place in the enzyme, dehydration reaction and hydrolysis. Dehydration reaction is when a new monomer is being add to the chain of polymer, while hydrolysis is when the monomer is being release from the polymer and water is consumed.
In a regular human body, it contains 46 chromosomes total. Through meiosis, the cells only contain 23 chromosomes. When it undergoes meiosis the two cells meet and form a whole set of chromosomes. Mitosis is the process known as asexual, where the daughter cells are identical. Cells that undergo mitosis are identical because an unfertilized egg develops into an embryo using its two sets of maternal chromosomes.

Anyways I hope everyone is enjoying their break so far, we only have one more week left till school start again, so make the best out of this week :) and Happy New Year. Let's make 2011 another great year for all of us :)

Pech's MP2 Blog entry # 9

The last week of class, we have been talking about photosynthesis, and the processes involve with it. We started a lab on photosynthesis, and how the color of the light affect how much a plant can survive. We've learned that the plants absorb every colors except for green because plants can not absorb green light, causing the light to reflect back, without light energy plants won't be able to produce energy and survive. The light that were absorbed by the plant, got transfer to the chlorophyll then the energy goes up to the reaction center, causing the electrons to transport to the photosystem I, and produce ATP along the way. During the lab, we did a color extraction from the plant, and use calculation to find the chromatography.

Pech's MP2 Blog Entry #8

In class this week, we were finishing up the diffusion and osmosis lab and cellular respiration lab. During the lab, we learned that diffusion is the process in which the particles move from a higher concentration to a lower concentration. There are three types of diffusion, hypotonic, hypertonic and isotonic. In a hypotonic process is when the cell absorb too much water causing the cell to expand and explode. In a hypertonic process is when too water come out from the cell causing the cell to shrink. In an isotonic process is when they both balance out.
In the cellular respiration, it is the process that create energy and there are three steps which consists of glycolysis, kreb's cycle, and oxidative phosphorytation. In the glycolysis process, they yeild 2 ATP, while in the Kreb's cycle, they also yeild 2 ATP but it releases the carbon dioxide. In the oxidative phosphorytation, it yeild 34 ATP. In total, there are 38 ATP in the prokaryotic cell, and 36 ATP in the eukaryotic cell.
We also talked about the process of photosynthesis, which consisted of the Light reaction and the Calvin cycle.

Pech's MP2 Blog #7

I forgot about the second blog entry during the weekend. Anyhow I am here to write it now :)
The week was fun, it went by fast as what I was hoping for. I did not get a chance to go to lab to type up the essay and lab summary for the diffusion and osmosis lab. To be honest, I am glad we have a day off on Tuesday, gives me an extra day to work on assignments that I'm falling behind with.
Last week, we started another labs called "Cellular Respiration." We made a few mistakes by misread the procedure of the lab, and it slowed us down. Since I'm not going to work this week, I should be able to go to lab and finish up all the missing works I have so far.
Overall I had a great week, and I'm excited to do more exciting things and experiments in class.

Pech's MP2 Blog #6

The first marking period ended last week, and this week was the first week of the second marking period. Time sure goes by fast, we're almost half way done. I did not do as well as I hoped to, but lesson learned and I'll keep myself in track this marking period.
This week, we are doing the diffusion and osmosis lab. Due to my work schedule, I did not get to start the lab on time like everyone else did, and I did not get to finish the osmosis part of the lab. Since I don't really get to be in lab, it kinds of hard to keep in track of what , but I'm trying my best.
I hope everyone have a nice weekend :)

Blog post # 4 and 5

I am having a hard time keeping up with the blog entry for the week. The blog supposed to be due 2 weeks ago and to be honest, I don't really know what to blog about. Since the marking period is almost over, I hope I'm doing good in the class and pass it with a good grade.
Last week, we took the test on Chemistry, and I did alright, could be better though. For the second marking period, I'm stepping my game up and stay in track with these blog updates every week.

Pech's blog #3

So, this is the blog entry for week 3, and during these past 3 weeks, we've learned, and did a lot in a short period of time. We did serveral labs, and experiments like I mentioned in my last post. This week, our main focus was on chemistry, and how they related to our body, and other living things. I don't think chemistry would be that hard since I took AP Chemistry last year. Most of the topics that we are talking about in class, that are related to chemistry, I already knew most of them, so it shouldn't be that complicated. Also, I am kind of falling behind with lab reports. I'll try to have them in by the end of the week.
Overall, I really enjoyed the class :)

Pech's blog #2

I am sorry with the late update of the blog, but I am finally back on track.

The first 2 week of the class, I really enjoyed it so far. I enjoyed all the interactions that we did in class, and I also enjoyed learning about all of the living organisms. Also, we learned about the characteristics of living things. Based on our experiments, we came to the conclusion that all living things contain DNA and cells, we also learn that all living things go through evolutionary changes. We did a lab on animal behavior, and we did a couple other experiments with the cockroaches, and other labs to test how living things react to their surroundings. I really enjoyed the cockroaches lab. Malgarita named all of them, and all of our roaches are still alive, so it is a great thing.

Setting up for success

I am enrolling in AP Biology because I want to challenge myself with a higher level of class and I also feel that Biology will be a good class for me because I am interesting in pursuing the health care career. AP Biology will help me be more prepare and learn more about the connection between our lives and other things around us.
For this course this school year, my expectation is to be able to fully understand the concept of Biology and have more ideas as of what Biology does to us and how it affect our life and also to understand and have a clearer idea as of what it will be like in college.
For this school year, goals that I have for myself are to pass the class with good grades at least a B or A. Also I want to get at least a score of 3 or 4 on the AP exam in May.
In order to make sure that I am successful throughout the course of the year, it would be helpful if there are tutoring sessions available weeks before exams or just in general for homeworks and any other things we're going to need help with.
In order to help myself get through AP Biology this year, I can use this website to keep in touch with my classmates and my Biology teacher to see the updates and I can also seek for help by looking through my classmates blog entries.

YAY!!

I've set up my AP Biology 2010 blog successfully :)
